Child Safeguarding – Consultant

  • Kenya

Sightsavers is a disability-focused UK-based international non-governmental organisation working in the fields of health, education and social inclusion. Sightsavers has worked in Kenya since 1989 to promote educational opportunities for children with disabilities. During this time, we have developed close and collaborative relationships with the Ministry of Education and other relevant government and non-government government ministries.

Last year, a consultant carried out an assessment of child safeguarding arrangements in three schools and a further group of schools have identified their own objectives for strengthening child safeguarding.  A consultant is now needed to go out to Kenya in order to review the work that has already been done and identify ways in which this work can be further strengthened, particularly through using the child safeguarding tools that Sightsavers has recently developed with the assistance of an external consultant.

The consultant will:

  1. Develop the child safeguarding knowledge and skills of relevant stakeholders in Homa Bay – selected staff from the pilot schools, selected staff from the residential hostels, selected staff from the Ministry of Education, and selected Sightsavers programme staff
  2. Raise the awareness of pupils with disabilities in a pilot school of child safeguarding issues
  3. Facilitate a child safeguarding assessment of one pilot school and assist staff to develop a child safeguarding plan for their school (which will explicitly state procedures for monitoring and review)
  4. Assess the appropriateness of child safeguarding tools developed by Sightsavers

It is anticipated that this will be 11 days of Consultancy with travel to Homa Bay, Kenya commencing the beginning of July.

Closing Date: May 24, 2018
